Mark 6:1-4 NIV84
Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What's this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles! Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.”Without honor: atimos (at'-ee-mos); to dishonor; to treat as common or ordinary.

The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men.Our school-aged kids are exploring God’s value system during this series too. Include someone younger than you as you talk it over. Share some examples of how you’ve forgotten honor. How important is honor to you? What role can you play in passing on the virtue of honor to the next generation? Talk about the ways we dishonor God. How will you begin to honor God more than you ever have?
